State to roll out ID tracking system for faster, transparent processing

Kenyans will soon be able to monitor the progress of their national identity card applications in real time through a new post-issuance ID tracking system, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced.
Speaking in Nakuru, Murkomen said the system will provide updates via SMS notifications or an online platform, helping to reduce delays and uncertainty in the application process.
“As part of our continued efforts to enhance transparency and efficiency in the ID registration process, I will soon be launching the post-issuance ID tracking system,” Murkomen said on Wednesday.
He explained that the system is designed to improve service delivery and ensure citizens have better access to government services.
“By providing this service, we aim to reduce waiting time and eliminate uncertainty in the application process, ensuring that Kenyans have access to updates on their applications,” he stated.
Murkomen also spoke about the government’s plans to introduce a national digital identity management system, which will include virtual IDs and digital wallets.
The digital wallet will enable citizens to store their identification documents on smartphones and access a variety of services.
“The digital wallet will be integrated with a wide range of services, providing access to government platforms, payment systems, and even digital signatures,” he said.
The CS emphasized the importance of mobile registration outreach programs, which aim to bring ID services closer to the people.
The initiative is set to cover rural villages, schools, and urban areas to ensure all eligible Kenyans can access identification services.
“The mobile registration outreach program we are launching today is another key part of this effort. By bringing services directly to the people, we aim to reach every corner of the country,” Murkomen said.
He also noted that the ministry is working to improve ID registration services for Kenyans living abroad by strengthening ties with the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
The introduction of these digital reforms is part of ongoing efforts to make the ID registration process more efficient and accessible to all citizens.
